Our approach to circular fashion
The Resell Club exists to make sustainable resale simple, trustworthy, and rewarding. Extending a garment's life is at the heart of what we do: every item we accept is sourced, graded, and inspected to ensure it can be loved again. Below we walk through our process—how we find pieces, assess condition, and run the quality checks that protect buyers and preserve value.
Sourcing: where our inventory begins
Sourcing determines the quality and story of what we resell. We use a mix of careful channels to find clothing that meets our standards and aligns with our sustainability values:
- Direct sellers and consignors: Individuals who bring curated wardrobes to us. We prioritize items that are well cared for, timeless, or from brands known for durability.
- Community drops and pop-ups: Local events let us capture seasonal and on-trend pieces while supporting neighborhood circularity.
- Brand take-backs and partnerships: When brands collaborate with resale platforms to close the loop, we welcome those items—especially when traceability is available.
- Selective buy-backs: We sometimes purchase higher-volume collections that fit our condition and sustainability criteria.
At every sourcing touchpoint we evaluate a piece’s materials, brand reputation for longevity, and repairability. Priority goes to garments that will retain function and style after inspection and light restoration.
Grading: transparent condition ratings
Grading turns subjective impressions into clear, consistent information for buyers. The Resell Club uses a standardized grading scale so shoppers know exactly what to expect:
- Like New: No visible signs of wear. Garment appears unused or barely used and retains original structure and color.
- Excellent: Minor, hard-to-see signs of wear. No stains, pulls, or functional issues. Ideal for those seeking premium secondhand items.
- Good: Normal signs of wear such as light fading, slight pilling, or softened structure. Fully wearable and well-priced.
- Fair: Visible wear that might include light repairs, noticeable fading, or cosmetic blemishes. Perfect for upcycling or layered looks.
Each grade is accompanied by detailed notes and photos. For designer or vintage pieces we add provenance and authentication notes when available, including visible brand markers, serial numbers, or original tags.
Why transparent grading matters
Clear grades reduce returns, set accurate expectations, and encourage buyers to choose secondhand with confidence. Grading also helps us decide which garments need repair, deeper cleaning, or responsible recycling.
Quality checks: restoring and verifying every item
Quality checks are a combination of technical inspection, cleaning processes, and minor restoration. Our goal is to deliver items that meet the grade listed and are ready to wear.
Inspection checklist
- Fabric integrity: Check seams, lining, and fabric for thinning, holes, or stretched fibers.
- Hardware function: Inspect zippers, snaps, buttons, and buckles to ensure smooth operation.
- Stain assessment: Identify any discoloration and determine whether it can be removed without damaging the fabric.
- Odor check: Ensure no persistent odors that standard cleaning can’t address.
- Labeling and sizing: Verify brand labels and compare measured dimensions to listed sizes for accuracy.
Cleaning and light restoration
Where appropriate, items undergo careful laundering, steaming, and pressing. For delicate or specialty fabrics we use professional cleaning services that follow fiber-specific protocols. Minor repairs—replacing a missing button, fixing a seam, or reattaching a hem—are completed by our in-house or vetted artisan repairers.
Authentication and traceability
We apply extra verification steps for designer and collectible items. This includes checking serial numbers, logo details, hardware finishes, and construction patterns against brand standards. When provenance is known, we add notes to help the buyer understand the piece’s history.
Packaging, listing, and lifecycle thinking
Once an item passes our quality checks it’s photographed, measured, and described in detail. Listings include multiple images, a condition grade, and honest notes on any imperfections. Packaging follows our sustainability standards—recycled or compostable materials where possible, minimal filler, and a focus on reusability.
We also plan for the garment’s next steps: items unsuited for resale are diverted to repair programs, upcycling projects, or responsible recycling streams so textiles don’t end up in landfill.
Benefits for people and planet
Our process isn’t just about selling clothes—it's about shifting consumption patterns. Key benefits include:
- Reduced waste: Extending the use phase of garments lowers textile waste and lessens pressure on new production.
- Lower carbon footprint: Secondhand purchases bypass many emissions tied to manufacturing and shipping new goods.
- Accessible quality: Grading and quality checks make high-quality, durable clothing available at fair prices.
- Community impact: Sourcing locally and engaging repair networks keeps economic value in communities.
